In 2018 Western Sydney was promised a parkland city. This drawing pulls one precinct apart to read that promise: what was said for the place on top, the approvals and spending in the middle, and the ground below. Click a numbered gap to go to its station on the walk. Drag the timeline to watch the record build from 2018, and past today to the targets the plans point to.

The record to date
1Mirage
The creek corridor is the one promise drawn on a map. The middle layer beneath it is empty here: no corridor or planting money shows, and the creek edge has few trees.
2Stray
Data centres sit loosely under the area-wide jobs and investment promises. No plan for this catchment asked for gigawatt-scale demand for power and water. The line rises and finds nothing drawn above it.
3Shadow
Approvals carry conditions on water, emissions and landscaping. The line drops from the permit and stops where the public record does.
4Unheld
Country is beneath and beyond the sheet, so it is drawn outside the frame. Its values are not ours to record without a First Nations partner and their terms.
5Quiet expiry
The two bodies set up to hold the parkland city promise fade behind the top sheet: the Commission folded into the Planning department in 2023, the Authority renamed and narrowed in 2024.
The walk: five stations
The drawing is the view from above. The walk is the view from the ground. Each numbered gap above is a place you can stand. Positions are fixed on a first visit; the questions are set now so the walk can't drift to fit what turns up.

Purple marks what was permitted or paid for. Green is the canopy and the promised corridor, blue the creek, and the terracotta wash is the heat held by hardstand. Pink hatching marks promises with no location: they apply across a whole region, so the drawing tints the whole sheet and lists them in the margin. Only the corridor is drawn as a place. Data centre volumes and their dates are placed to show the form, not to locate real projects. The reading itself is still to be done: see the Western Parkland City reading plan.
